HIP-HOP/R&B
The DMV based artist, Lil Røcket tends to keep his cool with his flow. With emotional melodies akin to Drake and the utilization of emotion through vocal autotune similar to Kanye’s 808s and Heartbreaks era, he has established a clear sound. On ICE Pack you can hear him take a more dynamic approach as he’s accompanied by fellow LAIDgang member MuhTeyOh.
As per usual the production is immaculate – keeping it exciting by using beat cuts and voice changes. ICE Pack strays away from Lil Røcket’s typical laid-back sound and gets in touch with a more fun-loving tone though the first song, “Talledega Kniights,” starts off plainly with the introduction: “My name is Lil Røcket, and I’m a rapper.” The plucky guitar playing you hear soon after draws you then the track shows its true character as soon as the 808s come in. The energetic bounce of the 808s blend with the melodic strings and create a perfect base for his voice to flow over. “Baguettes In My Braguettes” keeps that same confident air but takes a more ‘cool, calm, collected’ approach. The tone is changed by substituting the strings for a droning vibraphone loop. With lyrics like “I don’t f- with lames so don’t sit too close” and “cameras get to snapping 3, 2, pose,” you see the same unbothered confidence.
Though both tracks feature another artist, Lil Rocket stands out by switching up not only his flows but simultaneously changing the voice he uses for each. From unfiltered vocals to auto tuned to the mezzo-falsetto singing, the switch up grabs your attention leaving you with a chorus you want to sing along to.
*** Extra*** If ICE Pack isn’t quite your mood at the moment, no worries. Lil Røcket can also finesse over a smoother R&B sound. Check out his other latest tracks, “Wyd,” if you’re looking for Rexx Life Raj / Tobi Lou vibes.
