BPR ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

D-COLA

Unapologetically from The Bay; D-Cola is in the building and he is always feeling himself. With the iconic funkyness Mac Dre left imprinted on the Bay Area sound, D-Cola flawlessly creates flows and melodies with swagger & replay value that will leave you asking for more.

HIP-HOP/RAP

The West Coast has cultivated many great hip-hop artists. They hail from LA to The Bay and more recently stretching to Portland, Oregon thanks to CLBN rapper Aminé. There is something special about the many cultures and sounds that mix and match there. San Francisco artist D-Cola epitomizes what it is to be a true West Coast artist. Not only can he create the kind of bangers you want to hear in the club and at a function, but the Yay Area native draws inspiration from contemporaries like Roddy Rich & the late Nipsey Hussle with more heartfelt and sentimental songs about loss, success and love. He has a certain quality to his voice that can flow effortlessly on any track he gets put on. He’s got hooks and he’s got bars. There is no denying that D-Cola is an artist that deserves acknowledgement and attention for his tremendous talent.

"On That"

His most recent release, “On That”, is a West Coast club banger with a slight tropical sound reminiscent to last year’s “ZeZe” hit by rappers Kodak Black & Travis Scott. Producer HT does a phenomenal job creating a sound perfect for West Coast artists to flow freely and D-Cola does so accordingly. The track is a love letter to the rapper’s Bay Area roots. It contains the special funkiness that Mac Dre helped cultivate in the Bay Area’s sound. The sample of the anthemic “Feeling Myself”, alongside D-Cola’s quirkiness create a unique outlier to the common club banger. He refers to Bay Area staples such as giggin & hyphy, which are important styles of dancing, music and lingo native to the Bay; elements such as these embellish the record with personality. If you are from the West Coast you should be obligated to say AAAAAAAAY and start dancing.

"Vibe"

If you are looking for a more casual listen, “Vibe” is the perfect track to tune in to. A recurring trend in D-Cola’s discography is his ability to write and execute infectious hooks. His vocal performances are impeccable. The record is raw with a smooth and confident energy radiating from the subtle spanish guitar to his lyrical content. It is the perfect balance between club banger and radio friendly hit. His use of space in the song is top-tier and hands down immaculate. “Let’s catch a vibe, come be my lil bae – hop in my ride im tryna getta away – I catch a flight cause im tryna go outta state – and lets get high cause i’m tryna see outer space”. This chorus works so well. The structure of it, the rhyme scheme, and the overall vibe gives this song so much replay value. Needless to say, put respect on D-Cola’s name.

With three full-length projects, an EP, and nine singles available on all streaming services; D-Cola has an incredible discography and he does not plan to stop the growth to his ever-growing sound. I am excited to see how his music grows in the coming years. For now, I will keep bumping “Vibe” on repeat. *Chef’s Kiss
