Through the echoes of his voice and electronic sounds, Cole presents their vulnerability with the eagerness to please on the record. The production captures what it is like to lust and feel alone in the pursuit of idealizing someone you do not know.

ALTERNATIVE R&B

Eerie, sensual, and spacious. No this is not a recipe for the new Powerpuff girls. I am talking about Kenzo Cole’s “Know You” off of their debut EP Changes. Emerging from the DMV, Kenzo Cole takes on the contemporary alternative R&B sound noting influences ranging from Solange, Janet Jackson and popular genres of the 1990’s such as Dance, Pop & 90's R&B.

“Know You” is a track of yearning, loneliness and infatuation. There is a lot of curiosity and mystique that surrounds the lyrical content and the vocals. I found Kenzo Cole’s voice reminiscent of DMV contemporary Brent Faiyaz. Cole’s voice however carries a softer tone. The production on the track is minimalist, which highlights the contrast between Cole’s organic vocals and the mechanical sounding instrumental. This juxtaposition helps convey an emptiness Cole is feeling on the track through the range of emotions of getting to know someone. There are layers to this song!

You should want to get to know Kenzo Cole. They released their debut Changes EP on 9/21/2020. If you enjoy “Know You”, you should listen to it. We did and we loved the track “Timezones”! You will find much of the production and vocal performances are consistent in theme throughout the EP. Whether it’s a hook up, a relationship or entanglement; Kenzo Cole will comfort you through the situation and its familiarity on Changes. We look forward to what’s next for the artist.
