The mood on Mars is sensual, loud and eccentric. Tyler Mars finds the DTLA skyline in the nighttime to be intoxicating and magical. He makes it clear that love is in the air whenever driving through the city alongside frequent collaborator ABRAXAZ. Through softer melodies and raspier vocals, the duos’ dynamic on the track messes around with the conventions of R&B and Melodic Trap.

HIP-HOP/R&B/LO-FI

The mood is set in late night DTLA whenever Tyler Mars & ABRAXAZ link up for a song. Tyler Mars is an alternative R&B/Hip-Hop artist from Pico Rivera, California. Currently experimenting with his sound and coming into his own; Mars’ voice lately takes on Trippie Redd inspired vocals paired with his signature lo-fi late night sound.

Imagine a lo-fi PARTYNEXTDOOR Trippie Redd Lil Yachty type beat while you are driving through the DTLA skyscrapers. That is what you get with the “In The City” record. ABRAXAZ commences the song gently singing “We in the city right now” repeatedly, which then quickly fades out to Tyler Mars’ first verse filled with lyrics about lust and euphoric pleasure. There is a certain raspy quality to his voice that creates an interesting contrast to ABRAXAZ’s softer orthodox vocals. I thoroughly enjoy how Mars’ voice contorts itself because it is reminiscent of Trippie Redd and the “screaming” he helped popularize in melodic trap rap. Following Mars’ initial verse, ABRAXAZ takes on a bolder tone rapping in comparison to his usual crooning. The transitions between the two artists feel the most organic going into Mars’ second verse due to the matched energy and tone of the artists in that short moment of ABRAXAZ’s last bar. Their chemistry is eccentric and it works perfectly on this track.

The gentleness of the production in contrast to the vocals work well. I found that the weirder and louder the vocals got, the more I enjoyed the song and the duo’s dynamic. It is important to understand the different conventions being toyed around with sonically and structurally within the record. Tyler Mars has a very peculiar voice and he confidently makes use of it. The more comfortable he gets with belting out and harmonizing, the more memorable his vocals get. The vocal performances shine the brightest during the second half of the song, where both artists sound clear and loud. Undoubtedly one of the more cohesive and structured collaborations between ABRAXAZ & Tyler Mars. We look forward to seeing how they continue to grow and change! Check out the official music video!
